Free School Meals over Summer

I am pleased to see the Government has today pledged to provide a £120million Covid Summer Food Fund to give disadvantaged children free school meals over the Summer.

This means that around 1.3million children currently eligible for free lunches in England will get vouchers worth £15 a week that can be spent in supermarkets.

This is a welcome recognition of the struggles which many families are facing during this unprecedented Coronavirus lockdown.

Marcus Rashford has spoken very powerfully on this issue and I am happy to see the Government has taken his words on board.

A food voucher scheme had already been set up to make sure that those children on free school meals would be fed during lockdown after schools shut in March. Vouchers worth £15 were given to families each week in supermarkets.

I am glad to see this scheme will now continue through the Summer.
