This week I sat on a Public Bill Committee. A Public Bill Committee is a committee set up by the House of Commons to examine the details of a particular Bill. All Bills, other than Money Bills, are automatically sent in a Public Bill Committee following their second reading unless they are committed to a Committee of the whole House. The Bill in question was the Courts and Tribunals (Judiciary and Functions of Staff) Bill.

After the Committee took oral evidence, we went through the bill, debating each clause of the Bill and any amendments proposed to the text. After this process, the Bill - in its amended form has been sent back to the House.

I had the opportunity to ask the Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office a question at this week’s question time. I asked the Minister What steps the Government is taking with international partners to tackle the illegal wildlife trade. I care deeply about animals, and the plight of those animals illegally poached and traded is deeply saddening. I was also delighted to attend the Dog Trust’s Reception on Puppy Smuggling this week.

I was also pleased to attend the Christmas Reception for Science & Engineering in my capacity as a member of the Science & Technology Committee. The event was a great opportunity to hear from our scientific community.

In Southport this week I met with the Salvation Army to talk about the fantastic work they are doing.

I also had the chance to meet with a student who has great enthusiasm for politics. I was happy to share some of my experiences with them.

I was pleased to meet with Home Instead Senior Care. The company provide personalised domestic care to enable people to remain in their own homes. Home Instead Senior Care provide a fantastic service and I was happy to learn more about what they do.

On Friday, I visited the Southport Job Centre on Eastbank Street. During my visit, I met with staff to discuss the impact of Universal Credit on claimants and to ascertain how the rollout if going in Southport.

This weekend, I was happy to attend a talk at Southport Synagogue with representatives from the Jewish Leadership Council.

Thank you for your interest.
